Forward Into The Past

Achtung! As of 1 March 2006, the (pre-merger, valid, semantic, accessible) www.att.com home page will temporarily redirect to an interim site, att.sbc.com. This will be followed by a complete relaunch of the new www.att.com (launch date TBD).

For the record - and because I’ve been asked several times since AT&T was acquired: I am not directly involved with the new site at this time.

Meanwhile, a bit-o-reflection …

Those of you following our web standards odyssey up to this point already know how proud I am of my colleagues efforts. Over the past two years we have been plenty busy reworking our corporate site, among others, using standards-based techniques. The dividends have been many, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to have made it happen.

I recall how our design agency (at the time) was not exactly “sold” on web standards. Fortunately, perhaps after noticing what we had accomplished, they agreed to meet us halfway on realizing a new, standards-based home page in early 2005. That pre-merger page (still visible here) ended up being a standards trifecta, featuring screen, print and handheld media support, plus a respectful nod to Section 508. In a word: Yay!

I’ll miss that home page the most, no question. Good times.

Right! Onward and upward, as they say. I do wish the new www.att.com production and design teams nothing but the best, and look forward to seeing the relaunched site. As for Vincent, Rebecca, and myself, I’m confident there will be new adventures and opportunities ahead.

Until then, keep fighting the good fight, be excellent to each other, keep the home fires burning, eat your vegetables, and all that.

OK? OK.
